Skyline User's Forum _ Templates _ TrainSimulations' CN Ruel Sub.

Posted by: dgionet Sep 28 2020, 03:27 PM

Hello to all,

Following completion of the DARv3 template project, I have turned my attention to MLT's Bala Sub (v2) route for my oncoming project. However I wanted to roll back the timeframe in the late 80's. Since nearly all of the Bala Sub v2 motive power is of the 90's and later, I have checked in TrainSim.com for some quality motive power. The result is that I have turned my attention to TrainSimulations CN Ruel Sub high-quality motive power and freight of the early 90's, in addition to MLT's Bala Sub freight material.

One advantage of having this combination of route and railway stock: both Bala and Ruel Subs are only 200 kilometers apart from each other. However, I have encountered a major issue trying to create activities with the MSTS Activity Editor (AE). While Bala sub rail stock textures are made with ACE textures, all TrainSimulations's rail stock textures are now DDS.

The Activity Editor couldn't handle DDS textures. That is why the Activity Editor won't ever open if DDS textures are present inside any Rail stock. I have found out in Trainsim that AceIt can convert DDS textures into ACE textures. Following this information, I have decided to convert all TrainSimulations locomotives and freight textures from DDS to ACE, but before, I had to create a parallel folder to the TrainSimulations folder while keeping the original TrainSimulations folder with its original TRAINSET folder with DDS Textures. I have called it TrainSimulations2, copied all TrainSimulations' TRAINSET folders to the parallel TrainSimulations2 folder and started converting all trainset textures from DDS to ACE, using AceIt. For the shape files, Archibald helped me change all shape files to reflect all changes from DDS to ACE. It took a while but finally succeeded.

Following this undertaking, I could now open the AE and create templates on this parallel folder with all Bala and Train Simulations Ruel stock in ACE textures. I have decided to turn my attention making first the CN Ruel Sub and Bala later.

I am happy to confirm that the CN Ruel Sub template project has been completed as of yesterday. I have transferred all pertinent template files to the original TrainSimulations folder and will start testing. There are 2 mainline Templates (WB & EB) and 4 other templates, focused on switching inside the Capreol facilities, 2 for the Shops and the other two in the Yards.

Here's a picture of the Capreol Yards and Shops area, a WB template activity created with AG to give you an idea. Just a reminder, it will take a good computer to handle such quality material. To what extent, I do not know. I have a i5 processor with 16GB of RAM and a NVIDIA GT 740 video card. With OR Monogame, it is about 25-50 FPS, depending of the angle of vision.

Hi to all,

Testing is continuing and some refinements were done on the completed templates. Also two new templates (fictional) were added and refined as well. The first template depict some switching inside the Foleyet area, where one GP9rm diesel is the player engine. The second one is an urgent CN Extra overnight run from Capreol to Foleyet, working the Gogama wood products area at Ostrom and the Foleyet lumber sidings. All lifted cars from both areas are assembled in the Foleyet Yard 3 to be picked up later in the day by a WB mixed. In the case of the overnight run, two M420's will be making the run. The CN Extra 3554 train bears the name of the leading engine, the CN 3554. The run starts at 0h01. Despite the urgent run, traffic is active along the line and it will take all night and should finish around dawn.

The first six pictures are from the WB mainline template and from the SHOPS1 template, doing some diesel exchange of locos between the shops and the engine storage areas
