Hello to all,

As many of you know, the CP Mactier Sub was released last week in TS.

The route also includes the entire Barrie-Collingwood (BCRY) short line between both cities. Only one engine is part of the BCRY roster, which is the BCRY 1001 GP9. Unfortunately, the engine was available nowhere among the MSTS downloads. Last Saturday, I have decided to try to create the GP9 for the BCRY.

The newly BCRY 1001 has been successfully done and is now available in the Mophouse site as of today for download.

Here it is:

Also earlier this week, Ted Kocyla has enhanced the route with its texture upgrade.

I wanted to finish the BCRY 1001 before going any further with plans to announce my intention to create a template. Now this and the texture upgrade are done, I am now ready to offer to create one for the route, if no one else has already started it.

Denis,

Just a heads up.

One of our users, Ted Kocyla, has noticed that the track names and markers are somewhat inadequate on this route. He is in the process of doing both scenery and track name upgrades for the route, and will release the upgrades to the general MSTS community. The track name upgrade, as you know, will greatly improve the template for this route. You might want to contact him.

Hi Norm,

I received yesterday Ted's mail with his upcoming update to the terrain and assigning names to the remaining unnamed sidings. I haven't started it yet since I was waiting for Bernard Grant's 35-boxcar CP pack (Mophouse-MLT Downloads) before going ahead with the template. With Ted's latest mail, I do not mind waiting a little longer for his update. It is well worth the wait.

Hi to all,

For those who are members of the Mophouse forum, I would recommend you to have a look at what Ted has done so far with the upcoming upgrade ( See the "Mactier Sub v1.5" post). It is tremendous! He is closing in the Southern End of the route but this last section expected to be a lot of work out there being a more dense area. It will be a delight making a template for this one once the upgrade gets done.

Hi to all,

I have received earlier from Ted Kocyla the beta version of the Mactier Sub, which is expected to be released soon. Pending its official release, I have started slowly with the templates, selecting the appropriate stock, configuring the traffic which will be part of the route and building the necessary paths. At this point, the templates included will probably be NB and SB for the CP, one for the BCRY and maybe some CP local work between the Honda plant in Alliston and the Spence yard, which is used to host the autoracks a few miles away, one or two which may involve the Vaughan Intermodal yard. I have looked at some traffic operations, provided by Sean at the Mophouse along the route and some among the intermodal range from 7000 to 10000 feet long! I may limit the train's length in regards to MSTS limitations and also taking in consideration users with older computers, this I will look into the issue later.

Ted has worked hard and was worth the wait. So that's it so far. Once released, I will try to post some pictures as work progresses along the Sub.

Well, I couldn't resist...It is so well done.

I have started the NB Template traffic pattern and expect the diamond at Lambton to be somewhat busy at start.

Among the downloads requirements will include one payware only but the most important of all: MLT's Rogers Pass (RP) route. All engines will be used for the route and have been seen in pictures throughout the Mactier Sub including CEFX AC4400CW's and SD90MAC's. Most of the stock will also be used. The only exceptions will be coal and sulfur gondolas. It is a perfect package for the route. There will be also Bernard's coupler updates for all the Rogers pass stock. There will be also about 10 extra downloads to complete the package, which includes some of the original stock recommended for activities when the original Mactier route was released. Hugh Reilly's CN's Dash 9 engines will be part of the route along the CN Weston sub and Halton Subs for rail traffic purposes.

Intermodal cars being an important aspect of the route, one of the downloads will be the DTTX_K_Line_HuskyStack_BEW.zip file available in the Mophouse site. This one which will add 42 different stack cars in addition to the about 12 stack cars only available in the Rogers Pass set. The advantage of using the set is it won't require an additional payware set to use them. They require the stack cars shape files from the RP set. It will take some extra time to prepare the set for use but it is worth the time and finally have more than 50 different stack cars available for the templates.

The Mactier 1.5 stand-alone route is now officialy out and can be downloaded at the Mophouse site.

The work will now be moving one notch further with the template.

Once again, congratulations Ted for a job well done!

Hi to all,

Here's a rundown on the first week of the template.

The NB is now done and being tested. Close to 100 available sidings for the templates. The NB player trains will be a couple of CP AC4400's which can handle well 70 cars, which will be the maximum proposed in any player train. Final destination will be at Mactier 1 siding which has the maximum of capacity of about 70 cars. Since Mactier is only a crew change point, you will have to set in all SLG-generated activities the Mactier 1 as your final destination to allow your train to enter the siding and stop for the shift. That will end the act once stopped. Starting paths are located at Lambton, the Vaughan Yards and also at Ypres. The latter one at Ypres simulate that you are already running your way to Mactier. For those who will be running it, it will be mostly a running train with some meets and few sidings available to work; that is at the BCRY's Utopia area and the Midhurst area further North.

When preparing to wait for an oncoming train, once stopped before your signal, I recommend to reverse slighlty your train and stop on reverse. I have not done it at Ypres the first time and the train simply stopped at the signal ahead. Once I reversed and stopped while on reverse mode, the oncoming train started to move again but went through the siding at very low speed. I have redone the meet correctly and the oncoming train passed at a faster speed through the siding.

At Ypres, you will start on the mainline waiting for the oncoming train, the waiting time will be about 3 minutes. Immediately after the meet and once departing, you will be expected to stop to allow the BCRY train to pass at the BCRY diamond at Essa. Since it is usually not possible for MSTS to handle signals of both lines by itself, I was able to use an invisible loco just located between the signals on both sides of the BCRY to activate the stop signal. I had to create two traffic trains; one for the invisible loco and the other for the passing BCRY freight train. It took some time to synchronize all this and here's three screenshots of the meet. Also check the time it takes to turn from Red to Green once the train passes. MSTS would have not been able to do this.

I have generated another activity from the Vaughan Yard and picked up 70 stack cars and am on my way to Mactier. The act is not finished yet as of today, probably in the next days.

Some shots of the SLG act between Vaughan and Spence

Oh yes and almost forgot to mention it. I have replaced the CN Dash 9 along the Weston sub by GO transit trains instead along the CN Weston sub. I will also use them to do some railfill at the Allandale GO trains area.

So that's it for now and will update later

The NB, SB and the BCRY Templates are now done and will be tested by three of our users, who volunteered to test the package done so far. Thanks to Benny, John and Ted for your help testing the pack.

A few shots on the BCRY waiting for two trains (one SB and the other NB) to pass including here a 10,000 feet, 137-car intermodal monster with four engines, 2 of these spreaded along the consist.

Enjoy,
More is to come later

Hello to all,

The YARDS Template is now finished and includes work inside the Vaughan yards area and between the Spence Yards and the Honda plant at Alliston. In the NB and SB templates, you will be able to start your act or end it in the Vaughan area but won't include the Honda and Spence areas since only yard work is done between both locations. The LOCALS will involve picking up or setting up cars in the Spence yards while the YARDS Template will involve both Honda and Spence locations. In the YARDS template, I have changed the player train from 3 SD40-2's to only two sd40-2's as two units will be enough for the yard work. The user may wish to change to three if needed.

There will be some traffic in both areas. The traffic at the Vaughan area will be more a eye candy because work will remain inside the yards and will be a distance away from the mainline but those working at the Honda plant will be watching for oncoming traffic every 50 minutes along the mainline. Since there will be some back and forth between the plant and the Spence yard, thus crossing the mainline for about a mile, you will be checking the monitor for a red and an oncoming NB train a few kilometers South of the plant. I have tested a few short acts inside the Honda area so far, one of them done in one hour.

Working the Honda area will be lots of fun and opportunities for the user. Ted had a great idea to mark the prep sidings. Here’s the pattern of work for the area. Four of the sidings (From Spence 5 to 8) will be used to bring empties (brought from Toronto) to the prep sidings, which will be brought later to the Honda plant sidings to be filled with cars. The filled cars in the Honda plant sidings will be picked up to be brought directly to the other 4 Spence yards sidings ( 1 to 4) where the LOCALS player train will bring them back to Toronto (Lambton area).

The position of the markers and traffic’s orientation has been carefully selected to maximize its potential. Also the Spence Yards have been split in two regions to allow back and forth work.

I will be starting to work the last template; the LOCALS and will be probably the most difficult of all as I will try to incorporate some return paths and traffic, that may me difficult to apply with MSTS limitations. Also I will look at the the regions as well. That will be seen as it progresses.

Here are some images of the work around the Honda plant.

Enjoy the images, will continue updating

Hello to all,

The Mactier templates are now complete and will now concentrate on testing the whole package. The whole package is now composed of six (6) Templates; The NB, SB, BCRY, YARDS, LOCALSNORTH and LOCALSSOUTH. I will send to the testers later the whole package to be tested.

As expected for the LOCALS, I have encountered problems which I couldn’t resolve while having return paths because of the traffic trains stalling at some areas. I have decided to split them in two to have some moving traffic along the route.

An unexpected problem gave me some additional headache: some of the sidings along the Bolton and the Weston areas have sharp curves on which sd40-2’s stalled on the curves and couldn’t go further. That forced me to add another major player in the downloads: Paul Fowler’s CP GP30’s available in the Mophouse site. They will be the player engines for the LOCALS, set as 3 engines (2250 hp each) to handle the loads (6700 hp total) . Being at least 3 meters shorter in length than the sd40-2’s, I have been able to handle the problem but will need some extra throttle to go through but at least worked it out in those areas. It will be important to keep all three engines together in those areas to ensure some extra power to negotiate these sharp curves. The known areas so far are in the Signet Tools (Weston) and the AFA forest products (Bolton).

The LOCALS will involve some work between Lambton and the Spence Yards, bringing up empties to the Spence yards or taking from the same area full autoracks to Lambton. Also the LOCALS will handle mixed freight between Lambton and Bolton along the Sub.

Some shots from the SLG-Generated templates:

Will update its progress as testing continues

Hi again,

Here are some shots of a SLG Generated act in the BCRY consisting of picking up cars from the Penetang car storage 2 to the Utopia sidings. The Penetang spur and its sidings, courtesy of Ted Kocyla, were not present in the original route. The Colwell Jct siding act as a runaround for the GP9 which allows to move out the first string of cars on Siding 1 to allow the pick up of the cars located at the Siding 2 near the end of the spur and bound for Utopia. The whole process took about 50 minutes to do.

I have made a change to the maximum car capacity for each of the Penetang sidings (originally from 40 and 30 respectively) reducing them to 12 and 10 cars to allow the GP9 enough power to move the whole string of cars in one operation. I don t believe there are that many cars in the area as seen in one photograph of the spur, hence the reason of the reduction

Enjoy the shots

A question to all including my testers: has anyone experienced the following occurence?

While working on the assignment on the BCRY, the passing 10,000 feet 137-car intermodal monster disappeared for about 12 seconds during its passage as shown here in the following three shots ( with time showing on the lower right):

It disappeared at 9h45:12 then reappeared at 9h45:24.

My computer is a Dual-core with 3GB of RAM. Maybe this occurence won't show on more powerful computers like in Intel's I3's, I5's or I7's or similar processors from AMD. This is what I would like to know if someone has tested this on their own more powerful machines.

Thanks for your help

Ran this one today, Denis. NB appeared as you said at 9:45:12 and was by a 9:45:37. It did not disappear. I looked at it from different angles front, back and out eng window, and it was always in sight.

Thanks Ted for your information, well appreciated. That probably means that anyone having a stronger processor than mine (Dual Core) such as I3's or higher will not get that disappearing act. Since many of our users have more recent computers, the length of the consist will remain as is. I have already given details about this possible occurence in the readme file. It is the first time ever I use a 10,000 feet consist in any template, nearly 2 miles of train, quite a monster! Have seen one on video and takes some time to cross. Apparently, some intermodals can be as long as 12,000 feet. Quite impressive!

Thanks again Ted

Have continued with the testing along the BCRY, this time West toward Collingwood. Following the testing, I have made some important changes to the serviceable sidings in Utopia. Initially there were only two sidings I have used: the #1 and 2. The problem here is the low capacity of cars both sidings can hold. Therefore, the Utopia #3 siding was added and re-oriented one of the original two to have all markers positioned on the North side of the sidings. Utopia 1 & 2 sidings will be the source tracks and Utopia #3 will be the final destination track.

Also when bringing hoppers to the Stayner Co-Op, it will be important to leave the hoppers to be set out there inside the siding beside the other ones, go directly to Collingwood with your tankers only to work the area, going back to Stayner and pickup the other hoppers back to Utopia. Otherwise, if you bring the Stayner hoppers to Collingwood, the number of cars may become too long and make your runaround impossible for the return trip. To help with this, the Stayner Co-Op siding car capacity (inside the TDB) has been reduced to half of its real capacity to allow the remaining space available to the cars to be setout there in addition to those already inside the siding. Also the marker for the siding has shifted to the other side to allow such operation.

Some shots of the BCRY West to Collingwood:

Will keep updating its progress

Hello to all,

Work on the template seems to go very well at this point. My testers haven't come back with some serious issues to resolve,so far. On my side, I am continuing testing the SLG-generated acts. This time, I have been working NB on an extra with intermodals from Lambton to the Vaughan Yards and also started one NB mixed at Ypres with some pickups at Utopia and at Midhurst.

Some shots:

Lambton at the diamond. Just shows here the extent of Ted's work with the upgrade.

Arrival of the extra in Vaughan.

Picking up cars in Utopia.

Work at Midhurst (MP 67)

Had to toggle to manual switching to access the two cars. Once done, I have returned back to the original mode. Don't forget to save first, exit, toggle, reload, work your cuts, save again, toggle back to the original settings and finally reload your act to resume.

In Craighurst

After the work at Midhurst, I have collided further ahead with the oncoming SB at MP 84. Glad I have save the act at Midhurst! I have reloaded the work and stopped at Craighurst on a green, moved back slightly and then appeared the red signal and waited for the SB mixed to pass.Remember, back and forth movements may trigger a distant train to move ahead and collide further, especially if the train is not that far or is inside the circuit.I have moved back 15 minutes the traffic time of this AI train to allow extra time to work the cuts if necessary. You may not need it but it is done just in case.

In the template readme file, I have added the link of the following topic so after the templates get uploaded, you can still get some detailed information that the readme file may omit.

Well that's it so far and will continue updating.
