At the moment i am in the process of trying to create an Activity Generator Template, for the GN Hi-Line v3.

Am i correct in thinking that in simple terms, all i need  to create in AE, is a player path ( starting & finishing in sidings ), in this case Whitefish & Havre.

An AI path starting and finishing in the same locations, but running in the opposite direction.

Plus freight cars of a suitable type placed in each siding along the route ( one in each siding ), with a Pick Up action for each car.

Then from this use AG to do the rest.

Cheers,

Mike.

That's basically it.  You'll want to edit the csv files so that you can tell AG what type of car each industry wants.  It will usually default to intelligent choices but not always.  For example if you have loaded and empty coal cars you would place a loaded car in a coal mine (assuming that's what would get hauled out of there) but you'd want an empty delivered.

There is a step-by-step video tutorial showing you every step in detail with all the nuances discussed, on the Video Tutorials page on our web site.  This is probably the best way to get started.

I was going to create a template for this route, but if you do if, that will be great and I can get it posted that much sooner (if you're willing to let us post it).

Thanks!

Steve

Ok Steve i will carry on with it and if i think it is worthwhile, i will let you know.

I tried to watch the tutorials a few days back, but i haven't got sound on this particular system, as i only use this one for the internet.

I  will see if i can downloaded them and transfer them to my new pc over my LAN.

Of course you can post the template Steve, no problem.

regards,
Mike.

Thanks.  The tutorials can't currently be downloaded but I will work on making downloadable versions, others have requested this as well.  It never occurred to me that folks might not have sound on their systems, I need to remember that.

As to the GN route, I have completed the Ohio River Templates and will be posting that in the next day or so.  The next template on my list to do is the GN!

Thanks again,

Steve

Hi Steve,

the pc i use on the net is my old one, still has an SB Audigy soundcard installed. But when it was my only machine for both gaming and online, it was hooked up to a Hi-Fi amp and speakers, which i have disconnected.

I have the payware Ohio Rail update, but was a bit disappointed with it. But as you have created the template, i may have a go at creating a few activities for it.

Looking forward to those downloadable video tutes.

regards,
Mike.

Since you have a sound card you can plug a set of headphones into it and listen to sound, including videos.

I'll work on the downloadable versions.  I'm surprised you were disappointed by the update, I really liked it.  Anyway the new template has been posted so please let me know what you think!  Also that template should work with the freeware version without the update just as well, except you'll need to convert switches to manual and signals to permissive when working the branch lines.

Good thinking Steve, will have to drag the Phones out in the morning and give the videos a go. I would still like to see some downloadable ones, if that is at all possible though, please.

I noticed in the 3DTrains forum, you mentioned that the template for Ohio Rail, has multiple starting points. Is that essential for a template, as i was thinking more along the lines of creating more than one template for GN Hi-Line.

regards,
Mike.

Mike,

It is not necessary to have multiple starting points, but it is cool.  With that the player can load one template and then select where to start.  The regions that can be worked can be different based on which start point/path is chosen.  Creating multiple templates will work but it's more work for YOU, since you have to do all the editing, setting up rolling stock, etc., multiple times.  You can "cheat" a little by copying certain files of course.

Either way will work, it's really up to you.  The process is described in the manual and the tutorials.

Thanks,

Steve

Thank you for replying Steve, i think i will have to read the manual properly and watch the videos. There is obviously more to this template creation, than creating an activity with AI traffic and placing a few freight cars.

I have a heck of a job on my hands anyway, according to the AE calculations, it will take me 13hrs to run from Whitefish to Havre in one go.

Not sure how far it is in reality as the route does not have mileposts placed.

regards,
Mike.
