Hello,

I created a Rolling Stock Group and used it to replace an Ohio Rail activity. However, when I did this, it also replaced river barge traffic with an engine and freight cars. Looks very funny. How can I prevent Activity Master from changing river barge traffic? When looking at car types, tug boats are 'diesel' type, and barges are 'u' type. Any ideas?

When you started Activity Master and loaded the activity, from the 'Create/Manage/Edit Rolling Stock Groups selection, you need to open the rolling stock group that you want to use, and then press the 'Use Current Group' button. When you go to change the rolling stock, only the items you selected for that group should be available for changing or replacement.

I would suggest going back to that group, and make sure that those items, the barges and tug boats, are not selected (checked) in that group.

Jim,

Thanks for the reply. I've used Activity Master for some time now, & know the basics of it (I think). What I like doing is creating different Rolling Stock Groups for various railroads. In this instance, I created a C&O group using C&O engines & passanger cars, all of the Ohio Rail freight cars, and some added C&O freight cars. I then adjust the slider to the far right to replace the stock. This will replace all the original Ohio Rail engines and passanger cars with C&O, while all the Ohio Rail freight stock remains with an occasional C&O freight car randomly added. This has worked fine for various routes, but Ohio Rail is the only route I use that has river traffic. This is where the problem arises with tugs & barges being swaped out with engines & rollingstock. I'm @ work now, but I believe I checked (selected) the barges and tugs in the Group. I will try unchecking them & see what happens.

Al,

I think I can refine my answer a bit. For the barges, create a special car type for that such as BARGE. You can then select the barge as the only replacement for itself. This way, with that car type, it will be the only selection allowed for a barge. The problem with leaving it as 'U', AM will allow all cars to be selected as a replacement. DIESEL, I belive, is the only selection allowed for the Tugs. No matter what type I put in for a locomotive, AM will always change it back to DIESEL. That can be worked aound a bit in your Rolling Stock Group. For your locomotive, such as a Dash 9. only check the locos that you would like to see as replacements and make sure you don't select any thing that is a Tug. Now, for the Tug, only select the Tug, or Tugs, as the possible replacement. Don't select any other diesels. By doing this, the only possible replacement for the Tugs would be the Tugs that you selected. I believe this should work.

Jim,

I forgot about creating my own car types. Great idea! I'm alittle lost in follwing your idea about the tug. Should I run Activity Manager once to replace engines & rolling stock, then a 2nd time to only replace the tug with itself? Will have to try this tomorrow.

No, one time should do it. I sometimes leave stock unselected when doing a replacement. Things that I want to keep as is. AM should leave it as it was if nothing is selected. On some occasions I select it to replace it with itself and have not had any issues. Car types can really make a difference with some of the stock. It makes replacement easier for me.

Jim,

Well I deselected the tugs and made a new 'Barge' car type, and gave it a try. The barges appear but I still had an Alco RSD7 floating down the river. Since I'm replacing all the rollingstock with the selected files (i.e. slider to far right), and tugs are not selected, this is causing the problem. If I select the tugs, then tugs can also appear as part of consists on land. You mentioned that on some occasions you select it to replace it with itself and have not had any isssues. How do you select it to replace it with itself? At a loss here...

Al,

I forgot to ask this. When doing a replacement, are you letting AM decide what to replace or are you using the 'Specific List' option? I always use the 'Specific List' option when replacing since it allows me to select what I want to replace it with. If you let AM decide, it will change the Tugs out with any locomotive because it always will list the Tug as a DIESEL. I downloaded the AM manual from the Activity Master web page. Take a look at page 5 and review items 10, 11, 14 and 15. They explain the 'Specific List' function if you are not familiar with it.

Having a problem with the Specific List option. When I check Specific List, then select stock to replace some of the orginal stock, click the Proceed with Replacement button, then Replace Rolling Stock button, no changes occur. To check this I load the activity file in AM, then click the Show All button to view all rolling stock in the activity, and the original stock is still there, no changes made. If I do NOT use the specific List option, and just replace rolling stock in activity using a rolling stock group, changes are made. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure that both options for 'Specific List' are checked both 'Known' and 'Unknown' railcars. Also, make sure the slider at the top is move all the way to the right to 'Replace ALL the rolling stock with my choosing'.

Yes, I made sure above settings were made, but for some reason changes are not being made. I'm sure there is something I'm overlooking, but have messed with this for almost an hour and have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Like I said before, replacing stock without using the specific list option works fine, but using the specific list option seems to have no effect.

What version of AM are you using. If it is 1.6 you'll will have this problem. You'll have to switch to the latest version 1.6.2. That should fix your problem.

Glad it was solved! That explains why I never caught that. I never used 1.6. Updated from 1.59 to 1.62.
