I am getting region code errors with several of the AG4 templates for the Canton route. These errors point to the tdb file so before I reinstall the whole route I will start by asking the dumb questions. What causes these errors? Has anyone else experienced these errors? Is it something that can be tracked down and fixed without reinstalling the route? It has not been all that long since I used the old template and had no problems.

The only region code errors I've ever gotten, deal with an incorrect entry in the SWLTDB*.csv file. It usually happens when the SWLTDB*.csv regions do not match what is in the *.pro file. The *.pro file contains all the region information for the paths. Have you edited either of the *.csv files?

Hi Jim,

No, I haven't edited anything but I have found a workaround. I would get the error after successfully opening one template and then closing it and selecting another. Workaround is to close AG and reopen it to select another template. Don't know why and I don't recall this ever happening before. Maybe another of the many mysteries of Win7/64? Whatever the case, I can now use the new template. Many thanks for the response.

Hello Doug,

Can you give additional details as for example from which template are you getting the messages or else which can help? I will try to look into the issue and generate some SLG activities trying to find out one reason you may get the messages

Thanks

Denis.

Hi Doug,

As Denis said, if you could post what template or templates it is, there may be a solution. I myself have not run into the program giving any errors with the templates I am running.

As for Win7/64, I have not run into any issues running Activity Generator, Activity Master or Train Simulator. All the programs work fine. One thing I will stress, do not install the programs into the x86 Program Files folder. You are asking for trouble if you do. There is just too much to work around with all the security settings. I installed all my programs into a folder named c:\msts. In this configuration, I have not run into any problems with any of the TS releted programs.

Hello Denis,

If I open AG and select any of the templates in the new Canton Route template set (Canton Template.zip) then select 'Generate Activity' the creation screen opens with no problem. If I cancel that screen to select another of the new style templates for the same route, I will get the error you see below with a different error code for each template. The code in the attached image below is for the SWLACTCantonEBTemplate when that template is a subsequent selection. For SWLACTCantonLOCALSTemplate, the code will be 100. For SWLACTCantonWBTemplate, the code will be 19. For SWLACTCantonYARDSTemplate, it will be 13. When the old style template (SWLACTCSTG_Template) is a subsequent selection, it opens with no problem. Always, the first new style template selection will open, no matter which one it is and always, all other new style template selections will fail unless I exit AG completely and restart it. Hope this helps.

Jim, I just saw your additional note about program file (x86). Guess where my entire installation resides! Until I find the ambition to redo everything, I may just have to deal with all the troubles.

Hi Doug,

Have generated some SLG acts tonight and I did experience the same type of messages as you did when I have opened AG with the LOCALS Template (happened at least three times) but disappeared once re-opening AG. It is kind of strange to see this because I have not experienced this when building and testing the templates. I have examined the SWLTDB and the PRO files but found nothing to suggest the messages you and I have received. I have Windows 7 but all my MSTS folders (and even my MSTS apps including AG) are outside the Program Files folder to save myself from any troubles with Win7.

It may be one of the mysteries of life that never gets resolved dry.gif

With MSTS under Win7, it takes a little more knowledge to handle some of the inconveniences Win 7 brings. Quite a feat MSTS has been still standing there over all these years and AG as well! (Thanks Steve for this great and enjoyable product!!)

Am still enjoying today AG with all these available templates from all our colleagues.

Doug,

I'm thinking that might be the cause of the issues that you see at times. Starting with Vista, Microsoft changed the way security is handled in the Program Files (64 bit) and x86 Program Files (32 bit) folders. All files, that need to be written by the programs, are now done in the Documents and Settings folder. Older programs, such as Train Simulator, don't do that and this is where the issues come in.

It's not really that hard to move the installs. You should be able to copy your install or installs to a safe location. Uninstall the applications and reinstall to the new location. I usually test them to make sure they work. You should then be able to copy your install, that you previously moved to a safe location, over the newest version. That will save you the time of reinstalling everything. I've moved my TS install this way 3 times to 3 different computers without any issues.

Jim,

Thanks for the advice. I have moved my installation as you suggested several times in the past for the usual reasons - new hard drive, new computer, etc. and it has always gone well. That doesn't mean I don't procrastinate if it isn't absolutely necessary. It still takes time. I have learned a few work arounds to make life a little easier, like turning UAC off if I am going to run an installme.bat. Having to restart AG to work a different template isn't the end of the world - too bad I didn't try that before asking for help.

Denis, I agree with you 100%! It is amazing that msts is still going strong after 10 years. And while I enjoy the graphics and some of the other features in RW, I cannot create complete activities in minutes and with just a few mouse clicks like I can with AG . AG represents one of the greatest contributions to the msts community, IMHO. Thanks to Steve and to the rest of you who do all you can to help make msts more enjoyable for the rest of us.

I am wondering if maybe you might have had my old Canton template installed before you updated to Denis's? That might cause you to have things that don't match up in the various template files.

It isn't hard to reinstall ActivityGenerator, if you need a new direct link email me directly at SteveDavis@skylinecomputing.com and I'll send you a link to the full install.

If it's a template problem that won't solve it. In that case I'd delete any files in the \Activities folder of the Canton route with dates in 2011 (when I presume you installed the template), and further delete anything in that folder ending with .csv or .pro. Next re-install the template.

Sorry to hear about your problems. Denis is your best bet to solve this as he is the template author.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

The first thing I did when I had trouble was to unzip the old template to a temporary folder in order to ID all of the included files then deleted all of those files from my msts folder. After reinstalling the new template, there was no change in behavior. As to the AG install, I had cause to request that from you about 6 months ago (October, I believe) and I still have that download as well as a subsequent update should I need them. Workorders show v.4.2.12. At this time, since no other templates are having this problem, I have no reason to believe that it is my AG installation.

Denis has a lot on his plate judging by his comments in the template forum. If he is perplexed by puzzles like I am, he may continue to look into the problem. I he is busy with other updates, etc., I would not blame him in the least, since there is a workaround to the glitch, if he called it good and moved on. I have often found major CTD's to be caused by such simple things as a typo inside the quotatio n marks in a file name.

I can't thank all of you enough for this program, the templates, and the advice.

Good afternoon,
I just down loaded the current Canton template and checked the "SWLTD" table against the "PRO" file and found miss matched regions.
Example, The cantonWBtemplate lists RegNum 25, 19,13,8 in the PRO file but the SWLTD only goes 1 to 20 there isn't a 25. This error is also in the cantonEBtemplate.
One other number I question is there is a "0" RegNum in the other PRO files but no RegNum in the matching SWLTD files could this also be a problem?
I can't edit these and try them out as I don't have the canton route on my system.

Mayby some one else can comment on my findings?

If the region is in the PRO file but not in the SWLTD*.csv file, AG will tell you there is a missing region when you start the program and tell you to contact the template builder. It will also tell you that when you select that particular path when setting up an activity. However, you should be able to still create activities with the template. Basically, whatever numbers that are in the PRO file, must also be in the SWLTD*.csv file to keep from getting an error.

Update:
I took a look at this template too. Looking at the PRO file, when you read the line from left to right, the values of 0 and 25 do not have anything to do with the regions. The first number, or second value, in that line pertains to the 'Maximum cars in Starting Player Train' setting in Activity Generator, not any region.

Reading across the line from left to right:

Name of the path, Maximum Cars in starting Player train, region, region, etc.

Hi Peter and Jim,

In the PRO file of all AG templates, the first number designate the maximum number of cars the user can add up to its starting consist as shown here in the AG window for the Canton WB Template

As you can see here, the other numbers are shown after the first number and are the regions being used.

I have built the template to have the EB and WB templates work only the main yards throughout the whole Canton system while the LOCALS and the YARDS Templates work on the rest of the regions. The PRO file of both LOCALS and YARDS Templates start with no possibility to add up cars at start . That is why both PRO files have a "0" as the first number. For the WB and EB Templates, the user can add up to a maximum of 25 cars at start, depending of the path used in the template. You can have a "0" as first number in one path while another path in the same PRO file having a different first number.

Hope to have answered the question

Denis,

I must have been editing the post the same time you were.

The line reads as in my update.

Reading across the line from left to right:

Name of the path, Maximum Cars in starting Player train, region, region, etc.

Thanks Guys,
It's been some time since I made templates and I forgot that the first number is the max car count and I thought that I had stumbled on to an answer.

When all else fails, because of memory leaks and the way different versions of Windows handle caching of memory, it is safest to exit the program after loading a template and then load any new template after restarting AG.

Thanks,

Steve
