Hi everybody, I am very new to MSTS but like the programme very much and since I dont know much about programing I thought a program like Activity Generator would make my life a lot easier. I downloaded Activity Generator and installed alright, and then I downloaded all the Templates that I have Routes for into a separate folder. The question I have is where do I unzip the Templates too, is it into MSTS or Activity Generator or where ?Thanks to anybody who can help

Hello Rupert,

If the template zip folder contains separate subfolders for "Routes" and "Trains" (which are created when the template is packaged with Route Riter), here's how to install: The "Route" folder will contain a subfolder with the route name -- inside are additional subfolders for activities, paths, services and traffic. Copy the contents of each of these folders and paste them into the corresponding folders in your main MSTS route folder (for instance, if your template is for "Bridge Line", look for that folder in your main MSTS route folder -- inside will be the four folders you need to copy the new files into). After you've done that, go back to the template folder and open the "Trains" folder. Inside is a consist subfolder -- copy its contents and paste them into the main MSTS consist folder. Click "yes" to overwrite any duplicate files (that occasionally happens with paths and consists). It may appear to be a lot of work, but it's actually faster to do than it is to explain it...

Some older templates come with a self installer; simply double click to open and follow the installation instructions.

Hello Rupert, welcome to our group!

None of the templates go into your "Activity Generator" folder, all go into your \Train Simulator folder.

Installing Activity Generator Templates.

The best approach is to download and unzip the templates somewhere on your machine, maybe to My Documents. Then see what the folder names are and copy those to your Train Simulator folder so that they overwrite the files with the same name. Most of our templates can be unzipped directly into your \Train Simulator folder and will install themselves, but not all. Usually the readme that comes with each template (in the zip file) will have specific instructions for installing. I am sorry that we haven't been more consistent with this, but like most MSTS files, these have been contributed by many different folks and they each may have a slightly different approach. Basically the templates can be broken down into four major types/groups:
  1. Templates with .exe self-installers in them. Usually the .exe is found inside the zip file, sometimes you download the .exe file itself directly. With these, unzip (or save) the .exe file somewhere. Then just double click on it and the template will install itself. All done!
  2. Templates with the full MSTS file\folder structure built in. The majority of our templates are in this second category. One way to install these is to simply unzip directly to your \Train Simulator folder and say "yes" to overwrites. This is the easiest but it doesn't allow you to verify the process so it can be risky if you're not sure. What I like to do with these is unzip them, then you have two folders, \TRAINS and \ROUTES. If you do see these two folders then just move or copy those files into your \Train Simulator folder and you are all done.
  3. Templates with separate folders for \CONSISTS, \PATHS, \TRAFFIC etc. (which type 2 also has) BUT these are NOT arranged under a \ROUTES or \TRAINS folder. You can spot these because you won't see a folder called \TRAINS or \ROUTES in the tempate. These are a little trickier to install (but not much). To install these, first copy the \CONSISTS folder into your \TRAINS folder within your \Train Simulator folder. Next find the name of the folder where the route is. To do this look in \ROUTES in your \Train Simulator folder. You'll see a folder there for each route you have installed on your machine. For these, identify the folder for the route you are installing the template for. For example to install a template for the 3DTrainStuff Tehachapi Loop route, you'll want to use the folder called "3DTS_TEH2". Now, copy all the folders (usually, \SERVICES, \TRAFFIC (if there is AI traffic in the template), \PATHS, and \ACTIVITIES,) into the \3DTS_TEH2 folder. Always say "yes" to overwrites.
  4. A very few templates use Microsoft's Activity Packager. These can be identified because their will be a "packaged activity" or .apk file in the .zip file. For these you usuallyl follow the instructions in (3) above, PLUS, find the .apk file, copy it, and then paste it over a file called TSUNPACK.EXE in your \Train Simulator\UTILS folder (some people can just double-click on this file but that doesn't always work.
It is always best to download the .zip file and look for a file called 'README.txt" or "INSTALL.TXT" or something like that, usually there are installation instructions included with each template.

IMPORTANT: Read the Readme and Download, Install and Check any Rolling Stock Needed for each Template!!

You also need to read the README to find out what rolling stock you might need to download and install to run the template! If you install the template and don't install the required rolling stock (or, use Activity Master, our other program, to substitute the rolling stock called for in that template for rolling stock you already have on your drive or prefer to use), then YOU WILL GET ALL SORTS OF ERRORS WHEN YOU TRY AND LAUNCH MSTS! So be sure you have all the rolling stock you need installed BEFORE you try and run a template. We recommend two very good programs, available in freeware and payware versions: ConBuilder and RouteRiter, to check your rolling stock out before trying to generate activities using an Activity Generator template. Run ConBuilder or RouteRiter in the template activity (one of the files that ends in .act) before generating any activities and correct any errors, either by downloading or replacing any problem or missing rolling stock reported by these programs. That will ensure that your activity generation time is enjoyable rather than frustrating and fraught with "Send/Don't Send" message.

I hope this gets you up and running! If not please post back to this forum and let us know how we can help you begin generating your own MSTS activities.

This topic could be helpful to all new users of Activity Generator, so I am going to pin the topic.

Happy Trainsimming,

Steve
