Hi guys,
I recently updated my A&O sub template and tried to make a simple activity with the "Yard" template in Urbanette. I used North 1 and North 2 as source tracks and had Tyson 1 and Tyson 2 as destination tracks. In the TDB, Tyson 1 and 2 have HP and HPMT as the only cars "Wanted" and "Shipped". When I generate the activity, there are gondolas, tanks, and bulkhead flats that are to be spotted on the Tyson tracks! I am using version 4.2.0.12 My question is, how would I have the proper cars available in my source tracks that would match the cars needed in the destination tracks. I understand that North 1 and 2 have "Any" as the type of car that may be assigned to them. Hope this question makes sense?!? Thanx!!

Well, after some adjustments to my afore mentioned activity, I was able to achieve what I was looking for. I changed the CARWANTED and CARSHIPPED columns for track "North 2" to accept only HP and HPMT cars, and used only the Source tracks option and the Work tracks windows in modifying the act., NO destination tracks!! Not sure if this is the proper procedure for this type of situation, but for now, it works. Any other comments are appreciated! Thanx again......Doug

I believe this link will answer your question. In short, AG ignores the Car types wanted and shipped when choosing Destination Tracks.

Thanx for the link, Jim! I had read that post in the past for another situation, but it certainly applies here for sure. wink.gif

You should select a track as an "Industry Track" (in the middle box, 'tracks to be worked') for industries. "Destination Tracks" will accept any type of car regardless of the car type wanted setting for that track. That's because these are meant to represent yard tracks or interchange tracks where you end your run and do all your final setouts or tie up your train.

For a simple switching activity you would start w/ cars in your train or with "source tracks" and then service some Industry tracks. The will result in AG generating an activity that causes you to pick up the right kind of cars from those source tracks (and, like destination tracks, SOURCE TRACKS will have any kind of car you need regardless of the car type that track would normally ship - like a yard or interchange track again). And it will set out the right types of cars at the Industry track. So for a through train of somewhat random cars you could have just source tracks and destination tracks.

Here's the concept in a nutshell. It is common for a train to start somewhere, do some work enroute, and tie up somewhere else (or, if a 'turn', tie up back where you started). AG is set up to imitate this (but it doesn't have to). You set your "source tracks" and those tracks will be populated with whatever types of cars the industries you will be switching will need, plus some random types destined for the end of the line at the destination tracks. You then set "industry tracks" and those will receive only the proper types of cars and ship out only the proper types of cars. Finally the train ties up on one or more "destination tracks" which are set up to accept any type of car, so the activity can end once you tie up or set those out.

You don't HAVE to run AG this way. You can use only Industry tracks, for, say, and intercity or intraplant job that would bring cars between spurs that ship or need that type of car only (say lumber from a lumber source to a pulp mill, then pulp to a paper mill and paper to a newspaper). Or you can set source tracks and industry tracks ONLY, which means the activity will end after you pick up or set out the last car in the work order, or, industry tracks and destination tracks only which would mean (if you start w/ 0 cars in your train) a "sweeper" operation that starts with light engines, picks up cars along the way, and ties up on a destination track.

So to summarize:
1. The track types ("source", "industry", "destination") are not set by the template designer, they are set by you so you can create your own switching challenge using the tracks the way YOU want to use them. If a designer set up a track as a "Yard" track that is only a "hint" that you should use if for a Source or Destination track but you do not HAVE to do that.

2. "Source" tracks will be filled by AG based on what kinds of cars are needed by the industries along the way, and possibly with random cars if there is also one or more "destination" track(s) you set up for this activity.

3. "Industry" tracks are for industries: paper mills, refineries, cold storage, quarries, you name it. They only ship out certain types of cars, and accept certain types of cars (as set by the template designer) as appropriate for that industry.

4. "Destination" tracks are a place where cars picked up at industries along the way, or cars picked up on any "Source" tracks or in the original train that weren't assigned a specific destination by AG, are set out. They typically represent division points, yard tracks, interchanges or other places where a train or crew shift would end and cars would be set out to be dealt with by others later (assembled into another train or classified in a yard or taken by another crew on to the next destination).

Does this make sense? Basically YOU are in control - and, you shouldn't have to edit the CSV files to get the results you want, although I applaud your inventiveness for diving in and trying that!

Thanks,

Steve Davis
