Hello,
I finished up my second route and started the template for it.
There are 111 spurs and yard tracks on the route, When I setup the action events to pick up the cars I can only get 87 car set to pick up, If I try to add more cars the activity editor crashes, I know that MSTS has limits, What is the limit for car pick ups?

If this all the pick up events that I can do with activity editor can I go and edit the track database to take care of the pick up that the activity editor won't let me do?

Thanks
William Oliver

I'm not sure what the exact limit is, but you are probably at that point. AG only needs one pickup event in the Template activity to function properly. I've actually have done my templates in sections. I keep a master file that I will use for the template that has only the one event. I may do 50 pickup events and then create an Activity CSV file. Save it to another location and then keep going. I then cut and paste the events into one Activity CSV file that I will eventually use. This may seem a bit much, but it gives me the opportunity to work in sections and allows me to open the activity without crashing the system.

Jim's advice is sound. I am not sure that there is an exact number. On some routes it seems that 70 is safe, on others I get a crash at 60. My trend is to stay below 60, and Jim's suggestion to use about 50 should work.

What Jim fails to mention, though, and maybe it is obvious to everyone else but me, is that after creating the SWLACT*.csv file and saving it to another location, you need to delete the pick up events out of the template activity file before adding more.

With this method you can theoretically have infinite pick up events for your template (in the SWLACT), but never more than 60 or 70 in the actual .act file. As Jim says, you really only need one in the actual template activity file.

I wasn't all that clear on what I had written as Norm has mentioned. I keep a master copy of the activity file with one pickup event in a separate folder. Make 50 or so pickup events and then run the SWLACT*.csv file creation. I rename my working ACT file, the one I just ran the CSV creation on, to filename_1.act etc. and move it to my working saves folder. Then I take a fresh copy my master file and put it in the activity folder and start again with the pickup events. I keep the renamed files just in case if I need a backup or want to review what's been done. Also, if I need to add any cars to any sidings I missed, I always go back to my master file and do it there. This way you don't get any duplicate consist numbers. This may all seem tedious, but can sure save you if a mistake is made along the way.

Thanks for the additional information, Jim. I do exactly what you say, and for exactly the same reasons. It may seem tedious at first, as you say, but without doing these insurance steps, the template creator may regret his lack of diligence in preserving the "master" information later when a change is needed. Guess how I know this!?!!

My guess is that you wiped out something by mistake. I've been there as well. One wrong mouse click and it's all gone forcing you to start at the beginning. Always remember to backup, backup and backup while working.

For anyone else who wants to learn to make templates, this last piece of advice from Jim is paramount. THANKS Jim!
