Skyline User's Forum _ Templates _ North Coast Railroad (NCR) & California Western Railroad (CWR)

Posted by: dgionet Apr 23 2021, 12:00 PM

Hello to all,

I have started a new template project. This one will involve two routes. It happened twice before having two routes for a template project. The first was the SLI DRGW Green River with the Potash routes. The second was with the CONN River and Springfield Terminal routes. This one will involve the North Coast Railroad (NCR) route version 3.2 with the California Western Railroad (CWR) Route (available at the Elvas Tower web site). Both have the Willits area in their routes. In addition, for this occasion, I have created new repaints and renumbers for this special project.

The timeframe is set in the first half of the 90's during operation of the NCR

Here they are:

Two Arcata & Mad River 44-tonners in their original numbers 101 & 102:

Six NCR GP9's (4 original numbers and two fictional recently patched NCR) and Nortwestern Pacific #1922 in its original number (although this real-life repaint has been done later in the 2010's)

Two fictional 44-tonners for the Pacific Lumber Company (PalCo) with their original numbers (The real engines are actually 80-tonners)

I have already finished putting the markers on the NCR 3.2 route, now reaching Ukiah. The previous version (3.1) reached only Willits. The TDB file has been extensively worked and I have ran the entire route to put the markers at the appropriate position and given the proper attributes to each serviceable siding. Once the templates are finished, will start working the same for the CWR route.

Will try to post some shots as it progresses.

Hi to all,

Here are the first pictures from the first tmplate the NB template. The first leg, from Ukiah to Willits includes some pickups/setouts. It took 2 1/2 hours to complete. The second leg from Willits to Eureka consisted only with a runthrough to check traffic patterns. It took close to five hours. With work included, it will take a lot longer.

The pictures:

Hi to all,

Here are shots from two other templates, both working the areas North of Eureka. The first four shots are from the SAMOA Template, servicing the area up to Fairhaven and return to Eureka. The last six images are from the ARCATA Template, servicing the area between Eureka and Korblex and the AM&R interchange. This one also is a return trip to Eureka. With 15 cars to pick up at start and coming back with 15 other cars , both templates can take up to three hours each to complete.

In these images, we see Eureka Southern GP38's. Although these engines actually were not included in the North Coast Railroad acquisition of the Eureka Southern Railroad, I have decided to include them with the package.I am quite surprised of their quality, despite the fact they were done around 2002-2003. I am using them for the Eureka area and North to Korblex and the Samoa and Fairhaven areas.

I am currently working on the A&MR line template between Korblex and Korbel. A&MR 44-tonners will be used as part of the template. Will try to post some shots later

Hi to all,

Here are some details from the AMR Template.

From the AMR engine shop, you will be required, FIRST, to reach the AMR Interchange at Korblex, pickup your load, bring the load north back to Korbel (or Blue Lake or Glendale depending of your work) to service your sidings, since all sidings are Southbound oriented. Once done, simply return to Korblex at the Interchange and leave your cars you have picked up from the earlier sidings. The template has been conceived to allow you to make a runaround at all locations along the way ( Korbel, Blue Lake or Glendale).

Here's the only shot taken so far:

https://flic.kr/p/2kWwExhhttps://flic.kr/p/2kWwExh by https://www.flickr.com/photos/150924424@N08/, sur Flickr

You will be required to wait for CCT-70 with its load of larger flat cars to leave first the Korbel area. The idea of using the CCT 70 was taken from a picture seen of it leaving the Blue Lake mill with some cars back to Eureka. You will be following it until reaching Korblex to pickup your load and resume your work.

You can also notice a new addition to the AMR 101 & 102 44-tonners: the AMR 104 acting here as lead engine.

Hi to all,

Here are pictures from the Arcata & Mad River Template activity.

From the A&MR engine shop. This simple task was to bring back 4 log cars to the Korbel Mill and take one lumber car back to the A&MR interchange siding at Arcata.

Here are shots from the Scotia Template, switching inside the PalCo Scotia Lumber mill. In real life, 80-tonners were running inside the mill. Although the switchers here have been modeled on 44-tonners, the Power have been adjusted to those of 80-tonners.

Hi to all,

I am happy to confirm that all the templates are now done and are being tested as well as working on the readme file for both routes. Sixteen (16) templates have been created; Twelve (12) for the NCR and four (4) for the CWR.
This week, I have uploaded all my repaints (5) to the trainsim site which will be required among the downloads to run the templates: 6 NCR Geeps, three A&MR 44-ton switchers, one NWP number 1922 GP9, Two CWR GP9's (number 65 & 66) and finally Two Pacific Lumber switchers (See first posts above)

Here are the templates for the California Western route: Two for EB and WB runs. One for switching between Ft. Bragg and the Georgia Pacific Lumber plant. The last is a MOW run between Ft. Bragg and Northspur and return back.

Here are shots from the EB run

Here, you will be bringing cars with new sleepers in some locations along the run. The maintenance crew will bring the appropriate machinery later to replace these old sidings with the new ones. You will be also required to pickup some cars that have been filled with old sleepers back to the Yard areas.

What a great looking route you've showcased. I'll be looking forward to this, for sure. Looks like fun. Did the prototype run with all that traffic an multiple locomotives? Makes me wonder how all that business withered. Makes me glad for the simulator to experience virtually what once was. Thanks for your contribution.

Hi Christopher,

The template package is a mix of prototypical and fictional elements. I have taken the time to look at the motive power and rolling stock to be as authentic as possible of the early 90's, looking at pictures of the era. The Eureka Southern Geeps, which are part of the package, were actually not transferred to the NCR roster in 1992 when NCR purchased the Eureka Southern rail network. With this template, I wanted to put in evidence the Railroads and its motive power that shaped the NCR rail network.

The Pacific Lumber Company switchers were actually 80-tonners according to images seen in the Scotia mill. Since I couldn't find a model in the file library, I have used Dick Cowen's 44-tonner model to have it repainted as close as possible to the original models and have the power output adjusted to a 80-tonner ( 700kw or 940hp)

As for the California Western Geeps, the numbers are original numbers from the real thing. However, I have not been able to find any pictures of the CWR hauling lumber cars, nor finding the actual time the CWR ended freight operations between Fort Bragg and Willits.

The NWP 1922 GP9, as seen here with the package was restored and put back into service only in the 2010's. Despite this, I have included it with the package. I have no idea of the traffic operations of both NCR and CWR Rail networks, but wanted to maximize its potential. With this major overhaul to 3.2 (from 3.1), there will be lots of opportunity to get to know more this route with all the diverse rolling material that ran through both rail networks.

Hi to all,

The NCR 3.2 template package received the GO ahead from Benny, who has tested the whole package. Thanks again Benny for your time!

I will be preparing the package to be released. You can write me at the usual e-mail address if you wish to have it before its uploading to the templates page

Here's the image to be seen in the templates page, once uploaded.
