Since Steve Davis is not interested in helping me to solve my problems with Activity Generator & Switchlist Generator, I am deleting the program from my computer. This is not the first time I have contacted anyone for help without getting the "No one else is having this problem". I won't be buying anymore of these products and when seeing others ask about a comment on other forums about the products offered, my response will be "save your money, they are to busy to offer any support for problems but are quick to accept your money".

I am shocked to hear you say this.  Could it be that maybe you haven't been receiving the emails I've been sending you offering advice and answering your questions?  I show that I have sent you about 14 email messages since you sent your first one to me. 


I was under the impression that the only problem you had was that with one specific template, you were getting duplicate car numbers.  That was a template we only posted recently and it wasn't even one I wrote.  No matter I tried to help you.   You had an earlier problem with the UP Clinton Sub.  It was the exact same problem (repeating numbers on workorders) and again I'm pretty sure you simply aren't running the latest version of the program.  When I say "No one else is having this problem" I'm not trying to minimize it nor am I making that up.  But I'm not smart enough to figure out how to fix a problem if I can't get the problem to happen here nor can anyone else get it to happen.


You sent me a workorder and from that workorder it was clear that you were not running the latest version of Activity Generator (because it didn't have some of the information that version 3.2 prints on the workorders).  I advised you to update to version 3.2.  I asked you to run your version of Activity Generator and tell me what version it said you were running (this just yesterday on 3/31/2007).  You never answered me.  I was pretty sure installing the latest version would solve your problem.  I believe you have downloaded the updates but I don't think you've installed them correctly.  You can confirm for certain whether or not you are running 3.2 just by starting the program and looking at the version on the screen.  Yesterday I sent you a screen shot of what the latest version should look like.  Did you not receive that?  Maybe you have some sort of spam filter turned on and your email system won't allow you to receive emails if there is a file attached?  I have answered every email you have sent.


Way back on September 24 2006 you had a problem with a type mismatch because you changed the cartypes file, I helped you with that, I assume that worked as I didn't hear back afterwards.


I was unaware that you weren't satisfied with these programs.


If you truly aren't satisfied I'll refund your purchase price, no questions asked.  This is NOT about the money, I only do this as a hobby.  I charge a small amount so I won't have to provide support to people who don't really care about the programs.  I figure if they're willing to pay $14 they really intend to use the programs.  If this were freeware I simply wouldn't have the time, with a family and a full time job, to support all the users I might have.


Other than seeing duplicate numbers when generating activities using the the NNJ-NYC template, are you having any other problems?  Are you having problems with Activity Master?


At Skyline Computing the customer is always right.  Please email me directly so I can be sure I have your correct email address and request a refund if that's what you want and you will receive one immediately.  Or I'll continue to help you until together we can figure this out.  I would be happy to talk you through this on the phone, maybe together we could figure this out that way better than we've been able to do via e-mail.  Again if you want me to call you I will call at my expense, just email me at SteveDavis@skylinecomputing.com and send me your phone number and the time you'd like me to call and I will do so.

    I don't know who the Steve is that you are talking about???



    The Steve I know at Skyline has always been there
for me with any problems I have had and he always gets back to me even
if he is on the road with a time line as to when he can get back.



    I don't think you understand that his program takes
time to develope and when there is a problem there are thousands of
lines of code that may have to be reviewed to debug the problem. Also
the templates take many hours to get them just to the point that the
paths work and the pickups and set ups work.



    Remember you only contacted me the middle of last
week, most companys including the one I work for can take one day up to
several months to debug a code problem, so as far as the template
problem goes it's only been less than a week. Give him some time.



    One of the potential comunication problems that I have seen is that you use 2 different email addresses.



    When I contact Steve I only use one, this helps keep the communication lines open.



    I as a user of both of Steve's program hope you do
not dump them as These are programs we can all use and enjoy. Work with
him as there is an answer.

I have sent screenshots of my desktop with all the Switchlist Generator icons for version 1 and version 2 and the icon for Activity Generator 3.2. I also e-mailed you a screenshot of all files in my Switchlist Generator Folder. Can you tell me if I am missing anything?

I had requested help from Steve as far back as September 2006 for a template I was trying to create for the Clinton Sub. I had the same problem back then and got so frustrated i put the route on the side. I saw youe site on the SAL and decided to download it since I am in the south. Lo and behold, I am having the same problem. I just didn't like being told I didn't do an update to the program. I have been working on computer programming for the hospital inventory sytem where I work at for 14 years,maintaining the warehouse Inventory database.  I am not a programming guru because I have only been trained in the programming for this one system in the hospital. I know how to download an update and install it. This just has me stumped and I guess Steve struck a nerve when he told me that I didn't update the program and I apologize to him and everyone on the forum. I have templates for the Clovis Sub, Marias Pass, Tehachapi, Cajon, NS Pokey, your SAL Template, NNJ, and the Cascade Crossing. The only one I can get to partailly work is the NNJ templates. So I think you can see my frustration as I have all these routes but cannot create any switching activites for them BTW, I am a retired SP Railroad switchman so I guess this fuels my desperation in getting this program to function properly.

I wan't trying to "accuse" you of not updating the program.  The problem you were reporting led me to believe, even hope, that you were running an older version and so did the Workorder you sent me.  I was EXCITED when I saw that workorder because I thought, "aha, I know what the problem is!".  So rather than not helping as you said, I helped you right away, giving you the best advice I knew how to give: asking you to update to the latest version.  Because my programs don't auto-update I have had people download the updates but not install them correctly.  Some very smart people have tried putting each version in it's own folder for example.  That won't work though because it needs to overwrite the old version and be in the same folder as the old version since there are a lot of files in the \SwitchlistGenerator folder that the program needs to work -- such as the "preamble.dat" that someone reported having a problem with.


I do feel bad because I had no idea that you had all these templates and you're telling me none of them work on your machine!  I had no idea, I thought you only had a problem creating your own template for the Clinton sub -- which is understandable, doing that is a difficult undertaking as Peter, Norm and others will tell you -- and then with Peter Laier's recent NNJ-NYC template. 


The first question I need to ask you is, do these ROUTES work on your machine?  In other words can you run activities for the Clovis Sub on your machine? 


Since I wrote the Clovis Sub template myself, specifically for the latest version of ActivityGenerator (Marias and some others are older and only work with SwitchList Generator Classic) I'd like to start with that one in my quest to help you. 


1.  Can you run activities for that route? (Not ActivityGenerator activities, just other activities that came with the route or that you downloaded?)  If not then the problem is with your installation of the route.  If so then go on to step 2.


2.  Please generate an activity for that route.  Tell me which path you select, which track or tracks you selected as "source" tracks, and which tracks you selected as "industry" tracks.


3.  If the activity won't run or you get errors please tell me what errors  you are getting. Are the errors in MSTS, or do you see them while running Activity Generator?

I wish to go on record and apologize to Steve before everyone. Through my own stupidity I intially e-mailed Steve from my work computer which was a different computer than my home computer where my MSTS is. Steve had sent about 15 emails trying to solve my duplicate car number issue over the weekend but I was expecting them to come to my AOL e-mail account not my work e-mail. After not receiving anything from Steve all weekend on AOL, you can understand my frustration thinking Steve had abandoned me in my time of need.


It turns out I had a file missing from my Switchlist Generator Folder which was causing my problems. I have run 5 work orders so far and none have duplicate numbers. Steve and I communicated by phone and he found my problem in less than 5 minutes. I am going to try to run an activity now and see if I can complete it.


Peter, I also want to say you were correct about Steve. He is courteous friendly and cares about his program not working. He bends over backwards to help solve a problem.


I am now a Steve Davis and Activity Generator fan.

The old version and the new version I keep getting this message:

Error message =  SwitchlistGenerator  Run-time error '53': File not found

I get this when I am trying to generate an activity.

Choosing Activity (CSV) file   (I find the file I want)
Generate Activity (I press this button)

SwitchlistGenerator  Run-time error '53': File not found (My reward)

I also notice that Activity Generator defaults to the C:\programfiles\Microsoftgames\Train simulator directories on the C: Drive.   I keep the MSTS on another drive and every time I close Activity Generator down, when I come back to it I have to located the Train simulator directory all over again.   This does not happen when I use Activity Master, only Activity Generator.

How can I fix all that is mentioned above?  I have the newest version of everything.

When I worked with AJ it turned out that for some reason the SLG.INI file wasn't getting saved or created in his folder.  Also I think I had a mis-numbered ActivityGenerator version floating around.  On AJ's machine he had a SwitchlistGenerator.exe that SAID it was 3.2 but the date on the .exe file was 12/2006.  The latest version should have a date of 3/23/2007.  Can you take a look inside your \Program Files\ActivityGenerator folder and set the view setting in the folder to "Details", then tell me the date of that file, and, whether there is a SLG.INI file and what the date of that file is?


If none of this works I'll need to either get you on the phone and/or set up a remote troubleshooting session over the internet -- this is what it took to solve AJ's problem.

The SwitchlistGenerator.exe Date modified: 3-23-2007

The SLG.ini's date modified is 4-08-2007

I looked into the SLG.ini file to see what it said and the funny part is that it has the location of my MSTS folder and the EXE file, but It seems to not have the location to the Shapeview program which is odd because I selected the location many times. 

Here is  what's in the SLG.ini's file:

G:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\ROUTES\USA2\ACTIVITIES\SWLACTMP1_WestboundTemplate .csv
ShapeView not present

Also, I noticed something funny.  When I reboot my computer and try using the Activity generator, it appears that it will allow me to use it only once, but after that I start getting the message :

"SwitchlistGenerator  Run-time error '53': File not found"

Why does it require a computer reboot to use?  What is happening after it's 1st used?  Am I missing an essential file or something?

I'm sorry Jax, your question was quite reasonable, certainly not rude.  I apologize for my delay in responding.  I work full time and don't get home to check the forum until the evenings.  Last night I was out to dinner with my wife and didn't check the forum at all.


To answer your question, you should not have to reboot your machine after running ActivityMaster, that's for sure.  However, sometimes files don't get closed out etc. so we DO recommend you EXIT the program each time you run it.  In other words load a template, generate an activity, then completely exit the program.  Then start the program again before opening another template or generating another activity.  This will preven the "file already open" error.  I am trying to figure out what causes this and will fix it when I do.


If you're having problems I may need to work directly with you to solve them as I said in an earlier post, rather than trying to do it on the forum.  Please email me directly at SteveDavis@skylinecomputing.com and we'll try and fix this either via remote troubleshooting on line or via phone, or both.  Of course I'd call you at my expense.


We want to get you up and running to your satisfaction!
