B&M RR route template siding markers

Hope everyone had a safe and fun holidays.

I just down loaded the new B&M route with the intent of making template. The problem is over 75% of the sidings do not have markers and the tracks that do they are crowded together so you can't use the full length of the siding. There are tracks that go over to the Portsmouth Navy yard and there could be a whole days work over there, if there were markers.

The Question is: How hard is it to add markers and name them and or move them to make room on the siding so I can make a template? This is a great route for all the New England Railroaders, not the entire B&M but almost all of the lines in southern NH with a nice yard at Portsmouth.

Hi Peter;

Any time you wish to make any alteratios to any route, you must first obtain permission from the author of the route before doing those changes. After that then a good knowledge of the workings of the route editor is necessary to make those changes.

Moe:

If you are going to post an updated route you do need the authors permission. If you are going to post an update FOR a route you are not posting the route so you need no ones permission. It's just like a scenery upgrade. You CAN NOT post an altered route without permission.

For our purpose here including an update with a template for the sole purpose of using AG is OK.

I spoke to Jim Meindl about the B&M route last week and he said he will make the template with the changes to the track markers after finishing his curent project.

Moe and Pete,
Thanks for the update, I will be looking foward to the updated data. I'm planing a template in the early 50s when some of the lines were still intact, That way I can use early generation engines like the HH660, RS-3 and GP7s. The HH660 or a 44 tonner would be great to work the Navy Yard.
In the mean time I will explore the route to see where everything is.
I'm going to check out the Book Lost Railroads of New England to see when some of the lines were pulled up to get an idea as to the traffic patterns.

Just a question is it hard to change the markers? Every now an then I run into some that don't work and it would be great to modify them. When I did the template series for the Jersey City Route I ran into some miss marked markers that did not work correct so I left them out of the templates, Knowing how to fix them would be a help.

Peter and all,

Sorry for the late response. I've been busy with family doings. My plan is to modify the sidings and create a template. I still need to ask permission to post any update for the route. I spent some time looking over the equipment in the file library at TrainSim to see what would work well with this route. Still need to do some research on the B&M. Not being from the East, I'm not all that familiar with it.

As for changing the markers, it's not as hard as it may seem. Before even starting, make a back up of the route in case something goes wrong. The tools you need to use are in the Mode Window. From the top left, you will only need to use the first two. The first one for selecting and the second for moving the objects marking the siding.

looking foward to the route updates. I may be able to help with info on the B&M as I'm from north of Boston and currently live in west of Boston. The B&M main line now Pan Am Souther, runs right by may office window. Its too bad this is not part of the route that is modeled and the hill outside my widow some times requires helpers.

This past week I received permission from Paul to add the markers and names to the sidings. I'll begin this project within the next couple of weeks as soon as I complete the Cajon 4.1 template. Peter, thanks for the offer. The motive power will be the biggest challange. There really isn't much available for the routes era. I'll be in touch.

This past weekend I started to work on the B&M route. First up, I've been exploring the route to take a look at the sidings and the lay of the land. There are some areas that have few sidings and others that have more. About half of them don't have names but do have buildings associated with the siding to give it a realistic appeal. The route won't be able to handle AI traffic. The signals are scarce and the passing sidings are quite short. Those are also not signaled. Speed limits are between 25 and 50 MPH, although, they are not marked so it changes rather quickly. I'll see what I can do about that while working on the sidings. Right now they don't show up even in the track monitor, so I had a few derailments along the way. I think, with a template, the activities will be quite interesting since we can have the whole route available to switch, similar to the ABL with a path designated for the whole route. For motive power, I've looked at a few locomotives in the library and selected a couple that fit close to the route era. I've done the same for the rolling stock but will mainly stick with the shorter cars. Some of the curves are quite tight in radius. If anyone has any other ideas, please PM or email me with those suggestions.

Just a bit of an update on my progress. All the unmarked sidings for the route have now been marked and given names. The sidings, that had markers, have been adjusted to place cars for the template activity. I'm currently placing cars and reviewing options for paths.

The Boston & Maine template has been completed and forwarded off to Steve for posting. It includes the route update and a 'Special Edition' map by Craig Kawahara for the modified Activity Generator version.

Many thanks to Paul Raynes for allowing me to revise the route for Activity Generator and Craig Kawahara for creating the map to be used with the updated route.

I hope that everyone enjoys my finished AG template.

Great template, I like the updates to the wag files, most of the wags I had already done my self but it was a nice touch as to how you go the extra mile on a template.

This is to Rick, your B&M blue birds are spot on, i remember the days when the their paint was new. I did up a turn to the Navy yard with 15 cars and they pulled well with just a touch of wheel slip if you got knotched up to quick.

Jim do you know if Paul will be adding updates to the route. The reason I ask is the track work in the Navey yard was great to switch but one of the turnouts did dot work and there was a lack of eye candy un like the remainder of the route?

Peter,

Glad you enjoy the template. I had quite a lot of fun creating it. The wag files are a bonus. Once they have been corrected, I figure it's best to pass them on rather than have everyone else struggle with the ones that do not work well.

Not sure if Paul was planning any updates, I didn't ask. As for the switch in the Navy yard, that can be corrected. I must have missed one. There were some others that were fixed. When found, the automatic switches were replaced with manuals. I did that to a half dozen or so found along the way. Did you try running AG's conversion utility? Otherwise, if you let me know which one it is, I can go into the Route Editor and change it and then post/send the modified files.

Thanks for the offer to make the changes. So you won't have to go back and forth with changes I will note the location of and changes that I find as i run the route and just send one list. I'm currently running a local from Dover down the branch to Porthmouth and having a ball, this time I'm using the B&M HH660.
